What do you know about Kyrgyzstan?
You may know that Kyrgyzstan’s located in Central Asia, you might know about Lake of "Issyk-Kol" (Warm lake), or even about Tulip Revolution of 2005. But Kyrgyzstan is also known as an “island of democracy” in a region…
One of the main factors that provided confidence for such image is a strong civil society.
There are more than 8 000 non-governmental organizations have registered in the country, and about 500 of them are in proactive position. But for the country like Kyrgyzstan with its about 5 million population (more than 1 million have fled to other countries for a better life) even this number of NGO’s would be enough, if there is a possibility to work, to help people in a fighting against corruption, against poverty, and unfairness of the juridicial system.
Dear friends, here is an article from the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s correspondent Janyl Chytyrbaeva, reporting about different forms of attacks against civil society activists, especially against women.
These kinds of forms of harassment are just little scare me, because of its possible long-term impact to the whole system.
